The music realm bids farewell to the iconic Highlife maestro and co-founder of the Oriental Brothers International Band, Godwin Kabaka Opara, who has passed away at the age of 77.

Derda Promotions, Kabaka’s esteemed record label, officially confirmed his departure in a statement relayed to Cable LifeStyle. Chief Operating Officer Ammarachi Anyanwu shared the somber news, revealing that Kabaka bid his final farewell on Thursday. While the exact cause of his passing remains undisclosed, the music world mourns the loss of a true legend.

In a poignant tribute, Derda Promotions expressed profound sadness at Kabaka’s demise, hailing him as a visionary artist who reshaped the landscape of Highlife music. Kabaka’s musical odyssey was characterized by his infectious rhythms, soul-stirring lyrics, and unmatched prowess on the guitar, captivating audiences far and wide.

Co-founding The Oriental Brothers International Band in 1973, Kabaka emerged as a stalwart figure in the realm of Highlife, celebrated for his socially conscious verses and authentic sonic palette. Venturing into a solo career with The Kabaka International Guitar Band in 1976, he produced an impressive repertoire of fourteen albums, including chart-topping hits like ‘Mangala Special.’

Throughout his illustrious journey, Kabaka ventured into diverse musical territories, experimenting with Ezebongo rhythms and collaborating with outfits such as The Imo City Band. His triumphant comeback in September 2023 with the album “The Return of Kabaka” marked a poignant resurgence, championed by Derda Promotions.

Among Kabaka’s timeless contributions are seminal albums like ‘Uwa Atualamujo/Ihe Chinyere,’ ‘Ihe Oma,’ and ‘Oriental Special,’ each etching its mark on the annals of Highlife history.

As the music fraternity mourns the loss of Godwin Kabaka Opara, his melodic legacy and profound impact on Highlife music will endure, resonating with generations to come.
